Tuesday 16th
Today was the day of the battle concerning "Money Always Takes The Place Of Life" – the above-mentioned live favorite, of which the producer has his doubts...Last week Cobber put a mandolin-like guitar in the verse, and Laust recorded an extra high-hat with a pots'n'pans-like sound, and now the new ingredients would be mixed together... – Hard work paid off this time, and with a little bathroom echo on the vocal and a much dirtier sound, Joshua made it work! – without him ever admitting it, of course. Right after we started a recall; "Milk and Honey", an otherwise perfect dreamy, heroin, prozacpill sound picture, only marred by one single "S" that you couldn't hear, it sounded as if I sang "memoried"...Everything up again, lift the fader right there, wrap it up, put it back together again without touching anything else.
The rest of the day was spent copying all the tracks to something as old-school as half inch tape on reels – the first time we use anything analogue in this production – but Joshua felt that the (small) undigitizing effect that magnetic tape gives, is somehow nice for the ears.
While the copying took place, there was an intense discussion about which songs should be on the album and which were single candidates – a very tricky and unbelievably personal subject, and there was of course no consensus –
Stig suggested that we should have something to eat, fortunately we all agreed on that, and shish-kebabs and falafels were picked up.
Troels, our tour manager, came over and listened to all the tracks, and was totally blown away – this is among the best he has heard from us for many years....
Tomorrow there's a meeting at EMI, our record company....about (among other things)
which song should be 1. single.
